ARK Unreal 5.8 Upgrade (KI generated Image)

In Community Crunch 520, Studio Wildcard announced a surprising technical step: On September 30, 2026 **\[Update – CC 525 / CC 527\]:** **On October 28, 2026**, *ARK: Survival Ascended* will switch directly to Unreal Engine 5.8. Instead of first rolling out version 5.7 as many had expected, the studio is skipping this intermediate step and elevating the game straight to the latest version of Epic's engine. **\[Update\]:** **The UE 5.8 Public Test Realm (PTR) has been live and playable on the "The Island" map via Steam since October 5, 2026.**

The fact that this major leap is now becoming a reality is likely largely due to the staffing reinforcements brought in over recent months. Wildcard specifically recruited experienced Unreal Engine developers to make deeper modifications to the source code and directly implement the integration of version 5.8.

## What benefits does the update bring?

*Warning: Studio Wildcard has so far announced general performance improvements and bug fixes, but has not provided any details. The following points are based on the new features of Unreal Engine 5.8 and indicate where ARK could technically benefit the most.*
**\[Update – CC 527\]:** **Official architecture details confirmed:** In Community Crunch 527, Principal Engineer Evan broke down in detail the two key GPU optimizations that delivered the largest performance leaps in internal benchmarks: *Nanite Voxel Culling* and *Lumen Lite* (integration into the PTR client scheduled for early next week).

- **Smoother performance in dense forests:** Improved Nanite foliage technology integrates trees, grass, and bushes more efficiently into geometry streaming. This should noticeably relieve the GPU and CPU, especially in areas with dense vegetation such as the Redwoods or jungles. **\[Update – Confirmed\]:** **Nanite Voxel Culling:** Because reducing polygons on thousands of overlapping leaves and branches at a distance was extremely computationally expensive and left geometry looking bare, Wildcard replaces foliage clusters at a distance with volumetric pixels (voxels). These pixel-sized voxel approximations retain physical properties and wind animations, but place dramatically less strain on the GPU. **The feature is forcefully enabled across all platforms on all graphics settings**, which massively relieves zones like jungles and the Redwoods.
- **Fewer stutters while exploring:** Thanks to optimizations in World Partition and geometry streaming, the game world streams in more asynchronously when flying rapidly across the map. This reduces typical traversal stutters.
- **Potential for better lighting in bases (MegaLights):** UE 5.8 introduces the new MegaLights system, which efficiently computes hundreds of dynamic light sources. If Wildcard utilizes this feature, fully illuminated bases could run significantly more stably at night.
- **"Lumen Lite" for lower-end graphics cards:** Epic Games integrated a more resource-friendly ray tracing profile with version 5.8. If Wildcard makes this available in the settings, mid-range cards like the RTX 3060 could also benefit from attractive lighting without massive frame rate drops. **\[Update – Confirmed\]:** **Officially integrated by Wildcard:** Instead of calculating ray tracing probes across the entire screen every frame, *Lumen Lite* places an adaptive grid of probes around the camera. Ray tracing calculations are distributed and stretched across multiple frames, while individual pixels interpolate light values from the nearest probes. Dynamic lighting and responsiveness are preserved; **Wildcard recorded the largest FPS gains on consoles, entry-level/mid-range GPUs, and low graphics presets.**
- **More stable frame rates around large structures:** More effective mesh instancing and improved culling in UE 5.8 ensure that occluded or distant building pieces demand less computing power, mitigating FPS drops when approaching megabases.
- **Potential relief for dedicated servers:** Multithreading improvements in the engine can benefit servers. However, whether this directly leads to a higher tick rate (TPS) depends on how thoroughly Wildcard overhauled the network and actor code.

## What does this mean for admins and modders?

Such a comprehensive engine upgrade generally requires technical adjustments. Server operators and modders should mark September 30 on their calendars, as many community mods and server plugins will likely need to be recompiled or updated after the release. **\[Update\]:** **Schedule and mod freeze until October 28, 2026:**

- **\[Update\]:** **Engine release postponed:** The regular content patch (including Cerberax, Gargantar, Therizinosaurus TLC) went live as planned on September 30. The UE 5.8 engine upgrade itself has been scheduled for **October 28, 2026** to allow for quality assurance and mod preparation.
- **\[Update\]:** **CurseForge batch recook:** Since October 5, CurseForge has been automatically recooking all mods for UE 5.8. During this period, mod uploads are frozen. At launch on October 28, a list of problematic mods that require manual adjustments by their authors will be released.
- **\[Update\]:** **PTR testing:** Admins and players can test the current build on the Steam PTR. As part of the server stress tests, Wildcard is giving away keys for *ARK: Dragontopia* and *Fantastic Tames Season 1*.
