Dossier Giganotosaurus TLC (November 2026)

Studio Wildcard is giving the veterans of ARK: Survival Ascended a comprehensive overhaul. With the upcoming TLC (Tender Loving Care) update, the former king of carnivores returns on November 6, 2026, with completely reworked mechanics, new attacks, and an altered taming process.

## Carcass Cosmetics

As part of this year's **Extra Life** charity event, Studio Wildcard announced and gradually implemented a series of reworks for classic creatures. Five veterans of the ARK fauna were in the spotlight:

- **Araneo:** The update is already live and brought modern climbing abilities as well as targeted web throws to the cave spider.
- **Therizinosaurus:** Also already implemented; model, harvesting options, and combat animations have been modernized.
- **Giganotosaurus:** The release of the redesign is officially scheduled for **November 6, 2026**.
- **Quetzalcoatlus (Quetzal):** In the pipeline to secure the giant pterosaur's firm place as a mobile base and utility creature once again.
- **Megalosaurus:** The nocturnal cave hunter is another target on the list of upcoming reworks.

## Formerly the Grim Reaper, Recently a Circus Clown

Ever since its introduction to *ARK: Survival Evolved*, the *Giganotosaurus furiosa* was considered the ultimate apex predator, yet its rigid design had begun to show its age:

- **Extreme Wild Stats vs. Tame Nerf:** In the wild, the Giga boasts around 80,000 base health points and inflicts percentage-based bleed damage. Once tamed, it traditionally lost a massive portion of its hit points and damage scaling.
- **Uncontrolled Rage Mechanic:** If the creature took too much damage in a short period of time, its rage meter filled up. At full rage, the Giga bucked off its rider and indiscriminately attacked both enemy and allied dinos.
- **Static Taming:** Taming was purely passive and formulaic. The predator was lured into metal gateways, pinned down with a Large Bear Trap, and shot down from a safe distance with hundreds of tranq arrows or darts ("Trap & Tranq").
- **Fallen Behind the Meta:** With modern alternatives like the Carcharodontosaurus, the Giga lost its usefulness in both PvE and PvP.

## The Executioner Returns with New Sadism Upgrades

The revealed dossier showcases fundamental changes to the combat system and interactions with the titan.

### Taming Only for the Suicidal

Classic tranquilizing from behind safe cover has been completely eliminated. Taming now demands active combat:

- **Force Attention:** The Giga ignores ordinary approaches. Players must prove their worth by slaying Alpha creatures in its vicinity.
- **Battle of Attrition:** Once the Giga's attention is caught, an "Omega-level" fight for survival begins. The player must withstand its attacks until the beast is exhausted.
- **Provoke Targeted Rage:** After the exhaustion phase, the survivor must actively attack to deliberately ignite the Giga's rage.
- **Subjugation:** Whoever survives the rampaging giant long enough and wears it down in this state can finally subdue it permanently.

### Those Standing in the Back Die First

To prevent easy outmaneuvering, the Giga features new defensive mechanics:

- **Foot Stomp:** Crushes enemies directly beneath its feet and generates a noticeable knockback effect.
- **Tail Slam:** Lashes backward with full force to fling attackers at its rear and flanks aside.

### When Bloodlust Becomes Contagious in the Tribe

The rage mechanic no longer acts as a mere liability to one's own tribe. In the wild, the Giga becomes more resilient the more damage it takes. As a tamed mount, its berserker rage radiates to nearby allied units: Tribe members and tamed creatures receive a significant combat power buff, provided they keep a safe distance and do not stray directly into its path of destruction.

### Even More Spikes for the Open Coffin

Visually, textures and proportions have been sharpened: claws and legs appear more massive, while prominent scale ridges along the neck and back define a more dominant predator profile.

## How the Real Master Butcher Stripped Meat from Bone

*Giganotosaurus carolinii* ("giant southern lizard") lived approximately 97 to 99 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period (Cenomanian) on the South American continent. The first fossil bones were discovered in 1993 by fossil hunter Rubén Carolini in the Candeleros Formation in Patagonia (Argentina) and described in 1995 by paleontologists Rodolfo Coria and Leonardo Salgado. The animal belongs to the family Carcharodontosauridae, a group of specialized allosauroids.

With an estimated body length of 12 to 13 meters and a weight of 7 to 8.5 metric tons, the real Giganotosaurus was one of the largest terrestrial theropods in Earth's history—comparable in length to fully grown specimens of *Tyrannosaurus rex*. Its skull reached over 1.5 meters in length. In contrast to the massive, bone-crushing teeth of *T. rex*, *Giganotosaurus* possessed laterally thin, sharply serrated blades measuring up to 20 centimeters in length. These jaws were anatomically designed to tear deep muscle tissue and cause severe blood loss in prey.

In its Cretaceous ecosystem, *Giganotosaurus* served as an absolute apex predator. It shared its habitat with gigantic sauropods such as *Andesaurus* and representatives of the titanosaur family. Paleontologists suspect that these animals either attacked weakened sauropods or hunted in loose packs to bring down prey through repeated waves of attacks and slicing wounds.
