With the Gargantar, Studio Wildcard introduces a heavily armored colossus creature into the Dragontopia DLC of ARK: Survival Ascended. Visually, the reptile's head resembles a massive rhinoceros with a curved horn on its snout and a prominent neck shield. The lateral body openings are striking: these siphons function as ventilation systems through which the giant can breathe unhindered even when its stomach and pharynx are completely filled with battlefield debris.
Abilities: Suction Maw, Armor Buffs, and Stomach Transport
The Gargantar's central mechanic is based on a powerful suction that pulls resources, loot, enemy players, and allied tribe members into its maw. The more mass and debris it devours, the more resistant its armor becomes. Inside the beast's stomach, two distinct functions are served: while allied survivors can be transported there protected from enemy damage, trapped enemies suffer continuous penalties.
Through its active Fortress Mode, the Gargantar can activate a heavy absorption shield that massively reduces frontal damage. In this state, however, it remains completely stationary. At range, the creature attacks with acid spit that rapidly corrodes armor worn by players. Through its wide-area feeding and sweeping attacks, it also inflicts significant damage on building structures.
Tactics and Counters: Defeating the Colossus
When fighting a wild or enemy Gargantar, survivors should strictly avoid frontal attacks to avoid being caught by the acid or the suction pull. Once the creature enters its stationary Fortress Mode, frontal fire is ineffective. Instead, targeted flanking of its defensive lines is recommended:
Large, combat-strong carnivores such as the Rex, Giganotosaurus, or Carcharodontosaurus should attack the colossus exclusively from the flanks or the rear. Ranged fighters must pay attention to armor protection and operate outside the suction's reach. Due to its high destructive potential against building structures, a confrontation with a wild Gargantar should never take place within direct range of one's home base.
