During the night of November 7, Studio Wildcard released version update v97 for ARK: Survival Ascended. Alongside the long-awaited engine switch to Unreal Engine version 5.8, the patch delivers sweeping balance adjustments for official and unofficial servers, an extensive TLC rework for the Giganotosaurus, and the Enigmasaur—the final creature of the first "Fantastic Tames" season.
Unreal Engine 5.8: Technical Leap for Render Pipeline and Draw Distances
The switch to version 5.8 of Unreal Engine addresses one of the biggest weak points of ARK: Survival Ascended: the massive GPU load of modern lighting and geometry pipelines. Technically, Epic Games primarily optimizes instancing, large-scale geometry culling, and memory management for high-resolution textures in this engine branch. For players, this is reflected above all in the rendering of distant vegetation (Foliage) and landscape horizons (Distant Vistas), which are now streamed across all platforms with noticeably lower latencies and less pop-in.
A core technical feature of the update is the introduction of Lumen Lite for selected PC graphics profiles. Instead of calculating the full, compute-heavy global illumination of Lumen, Lumen Lite utilizes a more resource-efficient calculation model with reduced ray-tracing bounces and optimized screen-space traces. This preserves atmospheric indirect lighting without dragging mid-range graphics cards down to unplayable frame rates. Studio Wildcard plans to make this option available on a broader hardware base and on consoles in the near future.
Initial practical tests and community analyses—including those by content creator LoadedCrysis—confirm a smoother image without abrupt micro-stutters when flying fast over dense biomes such as those on Astraeos. While the update does not automatically lead to astronomical FPS leaps on high-end cards according to benchmark impressions from BEYPlaysGames, the frame rate remains at solid values and significantly stabilizes the rendering of large bases. An important technical note for server operators: due to the engine upgrade, numerous mods must be recompiled in the DevKit, which may lead to temporary mod incompatibilities during the first few days.
Balance Overhaul: Limitations for Mega-Tribes and PvP Fine-Tuning
The update intervenes heavily in the server economy and endgame to protect performance on official and unofficial clusters from data overload. The main focus is on automated Gacha farms and cloning chambers. Tribes with more than 100 Gachas actively placed will now face a draconian feeding penalty: the creatures will only eat every 60 to 90 seconds (instead of the usual 20 to 30 seconds). A new tooltip interface displays the current counter and status directly in-game. In parallel, Tek Cloning Chambers are being limited on official servers: a maximum of 10 cloning chambers within a 1,000-meter radius, as well as a global limit of 50 chambers per tribe. Furthermore, only one Tek Replicator may be placed on platform saddles moving forward.
New options for server administrators in Game.ini:
; Gacha regulation (-1 disables the limit)
NumGachasPerTribeForPenalty=100
GachasOverTribeLimitPenalty=3
; Tek Replicator on platform saddles (1 = allows 1, 0 = disabled, -1 = unlimited) LimitReplicatorsPerSaddle=1
; Tek Cloning Chamber limits (-1 = unlimited, 0 = placement disabled) LimitCloningChambersRange=10000
LimitCloningChambersInRangeNum=10
LimitCloningChambersInTribeNum=50In creature balancing, Wildcard has issued noticeable nerfs that specifically cool down the meta on PvP servers: Aureliax loses 20% of its base health and health gain per level, is slowed by 30% while carrying targets, and now has a saddle armor cap of 75. Dreadnoughtus must contend with a 50% longer cooldown on its cannonball and takes 50% more damage from all turret types. The ranged attacks of Umbra, Lumina, and Gloon have also had their damage output reduced by 30 to 50%. In the ocean biome of Genesis Part 1, the extremely high levels of wild "Feral" creatures have been normalized to the standard maximum of level 150 to make diving predictable once again.
Giga TLC: A New Era for the King of the ARKs
Enabled by the Extra Life charity vote, the TLC update brings a ground-up overhaul to the Giganotosaurus. The predator features an entirely new 3D model, modernized animations, an additional color region, and a reworked rage system. The notorious loss of control is now represented via a visible gauge for the rider and no longer triggers immediately from rapid single-hit bursts (such as shotgun blasts). Once the Giga reaches maximum rage, a brief window of opportunity opens: if the player lands successful attacks during this moment, rage decreases and the loss of control can be averted.
In combat, the Giga benefits from new abilities:
- Wounded Fury: If health drops below 75%, the Giga gains an incrementally increasing buff of up to +50% damage and +30% damage resistance. In full rage mode, this buff is automatically active at its maximum.
- Ally Buff: Nearby allied creatures (except other Gigas) receive 50% of the active Wounded Fury bonuses. A toggleable HUD element visualizes which dinos are within range.
- Heavy Stomp & Tail Slam: A directional area-of-effect attack. If the rider faces forward or to the side, the Giga performs a heavy stomp; if looking backward, the tail strikes. Both attacks knock back smaller enemies and briefly slow them down.
Taming has also been fundamentally modernized: tranquilizing with dart salvos from a cliff is a thing of the past. To tame a Giga, players must craft an Apex Offering from Alpha trophies and bring it near the creature to trigger the Apex Challenge. During the duel, the Giga's torpor fills through its own attacks—though it is initially capped at 50%. The cap is only removed once the Giga enrages and the player survives this rage phase. Once torpidity reaches 100%, the colossus collapses and can be fed as usual.
Fantastic Tames: The Enigmasaur Concludes Season 1
As the third and final mythical creature of the first season (following the Burrowbuck and Cerberax), the Enigmasaur arrives on the scene. The chameleon-like creature serves as the ultimate shapeshifter across the ARKs. It not only copies the appearance of other animal species, but also adopts their core abilities—ranging from aquatic traversal to flight capabilities and harvesting specializations.
Particularly noteworthy is the mechanic allowing players to combine learned traits across species. For instance, the Enigmasaur can retain attacks or venomous quills from learned species while in the form of other predatory dinosaurs. The Enigmasaur spawns starting immediately on The Center, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Ragnarok, Extinction, Valguero, Lost Colony, and Astraeos (The Island is excluded).
Overview of Additional Additions and Bug Fixes
Beyond the major highlights, version 97 introduces practical quality-of-life improvements. PC players can now access the mod browser directly via the pause menu without returning to the main menu. On Lost Colony, Tek Spear blueprints and Gigadesmodus saddle blueprints have been added to the Thrall outpost rewards. Players can now transfer DLC items without necessarily owning the respective expansion content (equipping them remains tied to ownership).
Numerous platform-specific bugs have been resolved, including artifact and texture glitches on PS5 in Lost Colony, faulty snow reflections on Xbox consoles, mod browser crashes, and an exploit that allowed the Ferox to be used during Genesis Gauntlet missions.
