ARK: Survival Ascended switches directly to Unreal Engine 5.8

ARK Unreal 5.8 Upgrade (KI generated Image)

In the current Community Crunch 520, Studio Wildcard has announced a surprising technical step: On September 30, 2026, ARK: Survival Ascended will switch directly to Unreal Engine 5.8. Instead of delivering version 5.7 first, as many expected, the studio is skipping this intermediate step and upgrading the game directly to the latest version of Epic's engine.

The fact that this major leap is now becoming a reality is likely largely due to the staffing reinforcements over the past few months. Wildcard had specifically brought experienced Unreal Engine developers on board to make deeper adjustments to the source code and directly implement the integration of version 5.8.

What benefits does the update bring?

Warning: Studio Wildcard has so far announced general performance improvements and bug fixes, but has not provided any details. The following points are based on the innovations in Unreal Engine 5.8 and show where ARK could benefit the most technically.

  • Smoother performance in dense forests: The improved Nanite foliage technology integrates trees, grass, and bushes more efficiently into geometry streaming. This should noticeably relieve the graphics card and processor, especially in areas with dense vegetation like the Redwoods or the jungle.
  • Less stuttering during exploration: Thanks to optimizations to World Partition and geometry streaming, the game world loads more asynchronously when flying quickly across the map. This reduces the typical traversal stutter.
  • Potential for better lighting in bases (MegaLights): UE 5.8 introduces the new MegaLights system, which efficiently calculates hundreds of dynamic light sources. If Wildcard utilizes this feature, fully lit bases at night could run significantly more stably.
  • "Lumen Lite" for weaker graphics cards: With version 5.8, Epic Games has integrated a more resource-efficient ray-tracing profile. If Wildcard offers this in the settings, mid-range cards like the RTX 3060 can also benefit from beautiful lighting without massive drops in FPS.
  • More stable frame rates near large structures: More effective mesh instancing and improved culling in UE 5.8 ensure that hidden or distant components require less processing power, cushioning FPS drops when approaching mega-bases.
  • Possible relief for dedicated servers: Improvements in the engine's multithreading can benefit servers. However, whether this directly leads to a higher tick rate (TPS) depends on how deeply Wildcard has reworked the network and actor code.

What does this mean for admins and modders?

Such a comprehensive engine upgrade usually requires technical adjustments. Server operators and modders should mark September 30 on their calendars, as many community mods and server plugins will likely need to be recompiled or updated after the update.
